Crime Prevention
Neighbourhood Watch Neighbourhood Watch

Neighbourhood Watch is a community initiative, which is supported by the police, not run by them.
  • To prevent crime by improving security, increasing vigilance, creating and maintaining a caring community and reducing opportunities for crime by increasing crime prevention awareness.
  • To assist the police in detecting crime by promoting effective communication and the prompt reporting of suspicious and criminal activity.

Minutes of NHW AGM held on 25th June, 2016

How it works:
  • A volunteer resident Area co-ordinator supervises the scheme and liaises with the police.
  • Groups of residents form a series of Street Schemes, each organised by a Street co-ordinator.
  • NHW member's names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses are recorded and forwarded via the Area Co-ordinator to the Police.
  • Information describing local incidents, e.g. thefts, break-ins, etc. is received by the Area co-ordinator from the local Police (Westbury) and forwarded to the Street co-ordinators who pass the information to their community in order to keep them aware of criminal activity in their area.

Membership of a NW scheme should enable participants to receive a discount on their home insurance; it is a common fallacy that if there are some schemes in the village everyone in the village qualifies for a discount - not so.
